High-scoring players have continuously coempeted throughout the Indian Premier League seasons to win the coveted Orange Cap which represents the highest run scorer of the tournament. The IPL auction showcases unpredictable nature since outstanding players might not secure positions during the subsequent season. Some of the past Orange Cap recipients have lingered without finding any bidding interest during later auctions to the surprise of fans and other experts.
Let’s take a look at three such players who, despite their impressive records, found themselves without a team:
1. David Warner

Among international competitors in the competition stands David Warner as its most outstanding batter. The Orange Cap belongs to him after his three victorious performances. He stands alone as a three-time winner of this prestigious award. The batting records of Warner during IPL show his 2015 performance with 562 runs across 14 matches followed by 641 runs in 2017 and then 692 runs in 2019 also in 12 innings. Sunrisers Hyderabad successfully won their championship trophy in 2016 because of the essential contributions from their opening batsman.
The veteran rejoined the Delhi Capitals prior to the 2022 season after leaving Hyderabad. Prithvi Shaw opened for him most of the time. The Paddington native only managed 168 runs at an average of 21 and a strike rate of 134.40 in eight IPL 2023 games. Throughout the campaign, he only managed one half-century. Warner was unsuccessful in attracting any bidders for the IPL 2025 mega-auction.
2. Kane Williamson

Kane Williamson has proven his red-ball experience while making significant contributions in One-Day Internationals and T20 Internationals too. The former New Zealand team captain has appeared in 79 matches of the IPL. His batting performance in IPL includes 2,128 runs scored at 125.62 strike rate with 35.47 average. IPL suspended its regular captain David Warner from the 11th season due to a ball-tampering scandal so Williamson took over captaincy for Sunrisers Hyderabad during the 2018 IPL season. Throughout 17 matches Williamson led as the highest run-scorer among all players by achieving 735 runs at a strike rate of 142.44 and maintaining an average of 52.50. During the campaign he achieved eight half-centuries.
He played with the Gujarat Titans for the previous two seasons. But in the two seasons combined, he only played in three games and only managed to score 27 runs. The IPL 2025 mega-auction failed to sell the Tauranga native. He performed admirably in the just finished Champions Trophy 2025. Later in the tournament, the right-handed batter may be used as a replacement due to injury.
3. Michael Hussey

Australian batsman and wicketkeeper Michael Hussey is recognized as one of the outstanding overseas players who have participated in the IPL. Michael Hussey made an important impact during his short time in the IPL tournament. During the 2013 Indian Premier League Michael Hussey reached two major milestones by winning both the Orange Cap and earning 733 runs while maintaining 129.50 strike rate and 52.35 average for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). During the IPL season he scored six half-centuries with the top score of 95 against the Kolkata Knight Riders in Chennai. The Men in Yellow made it to the finals of that season but their bitter rivals the Mumbai Indians won the championship by a score of 23 runs.
Despite playing just four games the previous season, Hussey was not auctioned at the IPL 2016 auction. He currently works with head coach Stephen Fleming as the Super Kings’ batting coach.
