The fourth Test between England and India kicked off on Wednesday, July 23, at Old Trafford in Manchester. The home team won the toss once more and asked India to bat first.
India made a strong start, with openers KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal laying the groundwork. However, they dropped both openers in rapid succession as England re-entered the contest. Sai Sudharsan, who replaced Karun Nair, impressed with his half-century of 61 runs.
Rishabh Pant was looking good at 37 when he had to walk off after suffering a brutal injury. At the end of the day, the visiting team was 264 for 4 out of 83 overs. Ravindra Jadeja and Shardul Thakur are on 19 each still remaining on the pitch. The match hangs in a nice balance after the opening day.

That being stated, here are the five records/milestones set by Indian hitters on Day 1 of the fourth Test against England.

1. Second Indian with 1000-plus runs as opener in away countries

KL Rahul is only the second Indian opener to score over 1000 Test runs in away countries. Sunil Gavaskar became the first Indian opener to achieve over 1000 Test runs in foreign countries.
Gavaskar achieved the feat three times: in the West Indies, England, and Pakistan. KL Rahul now has 1035 Test runs in England from 13 matches at an average of 41.40, with four hundreds and two half-centuries. He also entered a special club as the sixth Indian batter to go past 1000 Test runs in England, after Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, and Virat Kohli.
2. Joint-second fastest Indian to reach 1000 Test runs against England

Young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal made 58 runs on the first day. This helped him cross 1000 Test runs against England. He also became the joint-second quickest Indian to reach the milestone in the format, against England.
In just 16 innings, he matched former captain Mohammad Azharuddin’s record. The two are trailing only Rahul Dravid, who accomplished the feat in 15 innings, the fastest in the country’s history. Jaiswal has scored 1003 Test runs against England, including three hundreds and five fifties.
3. Second-highest opening stand in Tests at Manchester for India

Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul recorded India’s second-highest opening stand in Tests at Manchester. They scored 94 runs for the first wicket on the first day of the fourth match.
Vijay Merchant and Syed Mushtaq Ali have the record for the highest opening stands. In the second innings of the 1936 Test in Manchester, the two scored 203 runs for the first wicket.
4. Third instance of three Indian batters scoring over 400 runs in an away Test series

KL Rahul’s 46-run knock on the first day pushed his series total past 400. He’s scored 421 runs in seven innings. He trails only Rishabh Pant (462 runs) and Shubman Gill (619 runs) as the most runs scored by a visiting batter this series.
This is only the third time three of the country’s hitters have scored more than 400 runs in an away Test series. Sunil Gavaskar, Mohinder Amarnath, Gundappa Viswanath achieved that feat in Australia way back in 1977. Then came Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman and Virender Sehwag followed in Australia in 2003-04 season.
5. First visiting wicketkeeper with 1000-plus Test runs in England

Rishabh Pant is the first wicketkeeper from outside England to score over 1000 runs in Test matches there. The lefty batter now has 1018 runs in England from 13 Tests, with an average of 44.26, including four centuries and four half-centuries.
MS Dhoni, the former captain, ranks second on the list of most Test runs by a visiting wicketkeeper batter in England, with 778. Two of Pant’s four hundred have appeared in the ongoing series.
