Punjab Kings' captain Shreyas Iyer (2L) and his Mumbai Indians' counterpart Hardik Pandya (2R) shake hands with other players at the end of the IPL Match

Punjab Kings (PBKS) defeated Mumbai Indians (MI) easily in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025’s penultimate league match. They thereby guaranteed their place in the tournament’s first qualifier. On Monday, May 26, the two teams faced off in Jaipur’s Sawai Mansingh Stadium.

MI was held to 184/7 in the first innings by the outstanding work of the PBKS bowlers. The five-time champions’ leading scorer and only batter to reach a half-century was Suryakumar Yadav. MI’s total was boosted by Will Jacks (17 off 8), captain Hardik Pandya (26 off 15), Ryan Rickelton (27 off 20), Rohit Sharma (24 off 21), and Naman Dhir (20 off 12).

The chase was started by Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya with a 34 run opening stand before Jasprit Bumrah’s side got the first breakthrough. After Arya’s run help of the half century, Josh Inglis ably assisted him, smashing 73 runs in 42 balls.

Mitchell Santner got rid of the two half-centurions, but when Shreyas Iyer came on, there wasn’t much left to do. With seven wickets remaining, PBKS managed to knock down the score in 18.3 overs. Either team’s victory would have guaranteed them a top-two position, and PBKS’s victory over MI cemented that.

The following three records were broken during the match between PBKS and MI:

Rohit Sharma’s innings was decent as he opened MI’s batting and within 21 deliveries, he scored 24 runs hitting two fours and a six. Before stepping out to bat, the former MI skipper had 299 IPL sixes — he achieved a feather during the fifth over when he hit Harpreet Brar for a six.

Representing two teams, Deccan Chargers and Mumbai Indians, he has now smashed 300 sixes in the IPL spread over 270 matches.

2. Suryakumar Yadav breaks Sachin Tendulkar’s record for most runs in a single season for MI

It was Sachin Tendulkar, who before the IPL 2025 had the record of scoring the most runs for MI in a season. In 2010 the veteran notched up 618 runs and was the first MI batter to jointly top a season with any before Friday.
