Shreyas Iyer led Punjab Kings' chase with a composed half-century, Punjab Kings vs Mumbai Indians

Shreyas Iyer, captain of the Punjab Kings (PBKS), claimed that he only slept for four hours after his team’s entry to the IPL 2025 final. During Sunday, June 1’s IPL 2025 Qualifier 2 match against the Mumbai Indians (MI) in Ahmedabad, the 30-year-old had trouble getting to sleep.

In Ahmedabad, PBKS went to their first final in eleven years after defeating the five-time IPL champions by five wickets on Sunday.

“I couldn’t sleep. I hardly had four hours of sleep and I am here. I went to my room. And then next thing I know, I am here doing the PC,” Iyer said at the pre-match press conference on Monday, June 2 (via Times of India).

PBKS needed one of their hitters to come up and play the crucial innings as they chased 204 runs for victory.

That came from captain Shreyas Iyer, who helped his team win with one over remaining thanks to his undefeated 87 runs in 41 balls. In his IPL career, the 30-year-old said his innings on Sunday was the finest he has ever played.

“Top most knock I have played in the IPL,” Iyer said on Monday.

Shreyas Iyer has led three IPL teams throughout his career. He has been able to improve each of those sides’ situations quickly. After taking over as captain in 2019, he guided the Delhi Capitals (DC) to their first playoffs appearance since 2012.

In 2020, a year later, Iyer captained DC to the IPL final for the first time as a franchise and they ended up losing to MI. Four years after Iyer’s debut, he finally led Kolkata Knight Riders to IPL title, after winning against Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2022 final in Chennai.

He has the chance to be the captain who guides PBKS to their maiden IPL title which can come in Ahmedabad on Tuesday, June 3, 2025.
