At Leeds’ Headingley Cricket Ground on Tuesday, June 24, England defeated Team India by a commanding five wickets in the opening Test match. The outcome was a 1-0 advantage for the home team in the five-match Test series.
On Day five, the English team returned in an overnight score of 21/0 and they needed 350 runs to win the match. Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley were also cautious at the beginning of the play and managed to survive the first storm until the end of the first session, but still without losing their wickets. The pair then quickened the pace and brazed 188-run opening partnership to establish the stage to chase. Crawley exited having amassed a half century and Duckett followed through with a match-winning score of 149 (170).

Shardul Thakur and Prasidh Krishna each took two wickets as India attempted to claw its way back into the game following a long partnership from the English openers. In the last session, Joe Root (53) and Jamie Smith (44) led the home team to the mark safely after Root hit a reasonable half-century.

Shubman Gill points to lower-order failure after India lose 1st Test against England

During the post-match presentation, Indian captain Shubman Gill gave a performance review of his side and stated that the primary causes of their defeat were missed opportunities and the absence of runs from the lower order. He stated:
“Brilliant test match, we were in the game for the most part. Few dropped catches, our lower order didn’t contribute, but really proud of the boys and the efforts put in this test. Yesterday we were thinking about 430 or 440, but our last six wickets scored only 30 or 40 odd runs. Even today, we had chance, but things just didn’t go our way.”

“We spoke about the first innings collapse, when you were out it in the middle, it happens, one of the things we need to rectify in the upcoming games. Chances don’t come easy, especially on wickets like this, dropped quite a few but hopefully looking to improve. Not really, first session we were spot on, didn’t give away many runs. It’s hard to stop runs once the ball becomes old.”

On July 2, Edgbaston, Birmingham, will host the second Test match between the two sides.
