Mohammad Shami of Sunrisers Hyderabad delivers a ball during the 2025 IPL match

In the second Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 encounter on Sunday, March 23, at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Mohammed Shami injured his hand after dropping a catch at short fine leg.

Shami made his Sunrisers Hyderabad debut by bowling three fresh overs which ended in retrieving Nitish Rana but cost 33 runs. During the powerplay stage of play Rajasthan lost three batter dismissals in their bid to chase down 287.

Together, Sanju Samson and Dhruv Jurel attempted to salvage the Rajasthan innings in the hopes of writing an unlikely victory. On a belter of a track, both hitters were giving it their best as they attempted to put pressure on the Hyderabad bowlers.

Sanju Samson gave Sunrisers a chance as he attempted to draw away a slower delivery from Pat Cummins while he was batting on 53. But the ball soared off the bat of the Kerala wicketkeeper-batter at short fine leg because he was too early on the shot.

The ball popped out of the Bengal seamer’s left hand as he casually extended it to grab it. Shami decided to leave the field for medical attention after taking a quick check at his hand. Shami appeared to indicate the lights as he passed Cummins, presumably claiming that he had lost sight of the ball as it approached him.

Mohammed Shami gave Samson a reprieve, but he only added 13 runs to his total. In the fourteenth over, the former attempted to hit a big shot off a short ball from Harshal Patel. But all he could manage was a huge top-edge that Heinrich Klaasen, the wicketkeeper, securely pouched.

Samson struck seven fours and four sixes in his spectacular knock, which finished for 66 after he batted 37 balls. This put an end to his and Jurel’s heroic 111-run partnership off 60 balls.
