Rohit Sharma, the former captain of the Indian T20I squad, recalled “the moment” of the 2024 T20 World Cup final in Barbados, one year after the team’s historic seven-run victory over South Africa. The win guaranteed Rohit his second T20 World Cup victory of his international career and his first-ever ICC crown as captain.
Rohit Sharma claims that the amazing catch made by Suryakumar Yadav of David Miller at the distant fence would always be remembered. Rohit described how stressful that specific play was for him and the team as a whole.
“Even after [the catch], the umpires sent it up to the third umpire, and it was being checked whether Surya caught the ball or not, and everyone’s hearts were in their mouths. I thought it had gone [for a six]. Because I was at [long-on], I was standing opposite Surya. I was already thinking ’10 needed off five balls’, but then I saw that it’s coming to Surya,” shared Rohit while speaking to JioHotstar during the throwback celebration of the iconic trophy win.

He also shared his thoughts and a sample of his conversation with Suryakumar Yadav while waiting for the ultimate judgment to be shown on the big screen.
“I was standing with Surya when they were checking the catch and I told him, ‘You only tell me [if it was a catch or not], I don’t want to look [at the big screen]. Suryakumar’s response was, ‘No-no, I caught it.’ But then I saw him on the side telling someone, ‘Maybe, I don’t know. But I caught it’. And then they showed the camera zooming in, and when the ball or feet touch the boundary rope, it moves, but nothing happened. So, we were a little happy. But unless it comes on the board, you never know what the third umpire is thinking.”

Rohit did not actually do much with the bat in the final encounter but played a vital role by doing everything possible in order to secure the silver ware to India. Rohit became the top scorer in that series by the country (257 runs in eight innings with a strike-rate of 156.70) after beating Rahmanullah Gurbaz by 24 runs to 281 runs.
