Mumbai Indians' players celebrate their team's win at the end of the Indian Premier League (IPL) Twenty20 cricket match

On Wednesday, May 21, the Mumbai Indians (MI) defeated the Delhi Capitals (RR) handily in IPL 2025 match 63 in Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium. As a result, MI joined GT, RCB, and PBKS as the fourth team to earn a spot in the playoffs this season.

After their opening batters were placed in, MI built a total of 180/5 after 20 overs on the slower surface. He scored 73* (43) after the group had struggled. Though he was alone for some period, Surya was backed up by small contributions from Will Jacks, Ryan Rickelton, Tilak Varma and Naman Dhir as India kept bowling. Mukesh Kumar took two wickets for DC with the ball but allowed 48 runs in his time bowling.

DC lost wickets at frequent intervals and were bowled out for 121 in 18.2 overs, meaning they were never in the chase. For the Capitals, only Sameer Rizvi (39), Vipraj Nigam (20), and Ashutosh Sharma (18) put up a fight. With three wickets each, Mitchell Santner and Jasprit Bumrah stole the show for MI.

“We missed Axar on a wicket like this” – Faf du Plessis reflects on DC’s heavy loss to MI in IPL 2025

Hardik Pandya of Mumbai Indians and Faf Du Plessis of Delhi Capitals shake hands after the match

During the post-game presentation, DC captain Faf du Plessis offered his thoughts on the defeat, stating:

“Thought we were excellent on the field. Not the easiest pitch to bat on. But I thought we bowled excellent. At least for the first 17-18 overs. Those last two overs hurt us. Momentum is a real thing in IPL. With some players missing, it was a case of David and Goliath. I enjoy that kind of contest. We needed a good start with the bat.”

Faf du Plessis

“Pretty much sums up our season. Rizvi did well. We missed Axar on a wicket like this. You saw how Santner bowled. On a wicket like that, Axar would have loved to bowled. I am a big believer that you never take momentum for granted. We could feel that in the last couple of IPL games there was a fire to try and get that momentum back. Shows that when you are on the top of that wave, you have to ride it.”
