Rohit Sharma of India entering the ground

Rohit Sharma has announced his retirement from test cricket. The seasoned athlete, who is presently playing for the Mumbai Indians in the 2025 Indian Premier League, confirmed his choice on his Instagram story. Between 2013 and 2024, the veteran played 67 Test matches and scored 4301 runs at an average of 40.57. In the 2024–25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Melbourne, Rohit played his last Test match.

“Hello everyone I would just like to share that I am retiring from Test cricket. It’s been an absolute honour to represent my country in whites. Thank you for all the love and support over the years. I will continue to represent India in the ODI format,” Rohit. wrote in his Instagram story with his Test cap in the backdrop.

Rohit Sharma, who had already declared his retirement from T20Is after leading the team to a title in the 2024 T20 World Cup in the USA and the West Indies, will now only play in the ODI format for India.

There have been speculations about Rohit’s place in the longer format of the game, especially with the team set for the tour of England in June that will also mark the beginning of the new WTC cycle for India. Rohit had been in poor form in the past series particularly the recent couple of series – in Australia, he had an average of 6.20 and in New Zealand 15.16.

Especially, the first hints towards his doubtful future were observed when he decided to ‘stand down’ during the last match of the five-match series in Sydney after the series of disastrous performance both as a batsman and the captain of his team. The moment signified the starting of rising concerns more specifically over his position as a leader in the Test team and a top-order batsman.

Rohit began his tenure as Test captain in 2022, clearly after Kohli gave up the position. In the 24 Tests wherein he led the Indian cricket team, the team registered 12 wins, nine losses and three draws.
