On the first day of the fifth Test against England at The Oval on Thursday, July 31, India skipper Shubman Gill committed suicide with a run-out. The visitors were in trouble at 83/3 after the right-handed hitter left for 21 runs off 35 balls.
The incident happened during India’s first innings in the twenty-eighth over. Gill used gentle hands to push a length that Gus Atkinson bowled off-stump towards the off-side and started to run, but the ball was too near to the bowler. Gill was halfway down the track when the pacer caught the ball and delivered a direct shot. He ultimately gave away his wicket because he had reached the point of no return.

Ollie Pope-Led England Stay on Top as Rain Halts Play in 5th Test vs India

On Day 1 of the fifth Test, England is leading India in cloudy conditions thanks to a brilliant bowling and fielding performance. Chris Woakes sliced off KL Rahul for 14 in the first session after Gus Atkinson caught Yashasvi Jaiswal leg before wicket. After winning the toss, Ollie Pope, the stand-in captain, decided to bowl, which further strengthened the home team with the wicket of Shubman Gill.
After 29 overs, the visitors were 85/3 at the time of writing, with Karun Nair (0) and Sai Sudharsan (28) at the crease. After the lunch break, six overs were feasible, but the rain has caused yet another delay.

Shubman Gill has lead a team that has made four substitutions. Among the prominent missers there was the India vice-captain Rishabh Pant (injured) and world No. 1 Test bowler Jasprit Bumrah (rest). The regular captain of the home team, Ben Stokes, was taken off by an injury.
England leads 2-1 in the five match series. Hence, Team India has to win the game not to lose the Test series the third time in series.
