India's Rishabh Pant (right) reacts after injuring his finger during day one of the Third Rothesay Men's Test at Lord's, London

Rishabh Pant, India’s wicketkeeper-batsman, suffered a finger injury during the team’s 22-run defeat to England at Lord’s in London in the third Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Ryan ten Doeschate, India’s assistant coach, verified that the 27-year-old was not present at the Thursday, July 17 practice session in Beckenham.

Ten Doeschate appeared optimistic that Pant will fully recover in time for India’s crucial fourth Test match. “The southpaw will resume his batting practice in Manchester,” he said.

He also highlighted that Pant’s fitness to keep wickets will be critical, as India will not want to replace him with a substitute keeper again. Prior to the fourth Test, Ten Doeschate made these remarks during a press conference. He stated:

“He will bat in Manchester before the Test. I don’t think you want to keep Rishabh out of the Test, no matter what. He batted with quite a lot of pain in the third Test and it’s only going to get easier and easier on his finger. Keeping is obviously the last part of the process to make sure he can keep. We don’t want to go through that again, where we have to replace the keeper halfway through an innings. He rested today, hopefully, he is good to go in Manchester.”

“He (Dhruv Jurel) is in the equation, but obviously, if Rishabh is fit, he plays the next Test.”

During England’s first innings of the just finished Lord’s Test, Rishabh Pant injured his left index finger while taking wickets. After the injury, he left the field, and Dhruv Jurel, a substitute, took over as the custodian.

Despite been injured, he did a pretty good job with the bat, batting a crucial 74 runs in India’s first innings. But while England claimed a thrilling 22-run success which has given them a 2-1 lead in the five-match series.

Ryan ten Doeschate too reacted strongly over the visiting team’s batting in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. He owned that batting surrender was the cause of their loses at Headingley and Lord’s.

However, he said that the majority of Indian batters appeared to be in good form. According to Ten Doeschate:

“We feel like the guys have been excellent for a large part of the series. The repetition of losing lots of wickets in a very short space of time has been the key feature of the two losses.

“If you look at the run tally of all the batters, they are all batting nicely. Even someone like Karun, his rhythm and tempo are good. We want more runs from the three, but the message is mainly let’s really focus on what we have done well and tidy up the little things that have cost us results.”
