Mumbai Indians' captain Hardik Pandya (2L) celebrates with teammates after taking the wicket of Sunrisers Hyderabad's Nitish Kumar Reddy

On Saturday, March 22, the Indian Premier League (IPL) will begin its 18th season. The first game of the season will pit the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). Sunday, March 23, will see the matchup of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Mumbai Indians (MI), two of the league’s most successful teams.

With up to five IPL wins under their belt, MI stands out as one of the best teams in T20 tournaments around the world. The MI teams have won a number of international competitions in addition to the IPL, the most recent of which was the Women’s Premier League (WPL).

Their performances over the past four years have fallen short of expectations, even though they are the IPL’s most successful team, along with CSK. Following consecutive championships in 2019 and 2020, MI missed three of the following four seasons’ playoffs.

The transfer of captaincy to Hardik Pandya last year caused a stir among the supporters. For the franchise and the new captain, it proved to be a difficult year. They did, however, put together a strong team in the massive auction last November, and they stand a chance of expanding their cabinet by one title.

3 reasons why MI can win IPL 2025:

1. Explosive Batting Line-up

Rohit Sharma celebrate fifty in 28 balls

Mumbai Indians composed their batting lineup through a combination of veteran and young players. Rohit Sharma starts quickly followed by Will Jacks at the top of the order together with Ryan Rickelton and Bevon John-Jacobs bringing the power hitting ability. Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Shrijith Krishnan, Naman Dhir and Raj Angad Bawa unite with Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya to form the attacking players of the Mumbai Indians squad.

2. Experienced Squad

The five-time champions have a seasoned squad led by Hardik Pandya, with Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, and Tilak Varma forming the batting core. Jasprit Bumrah leads the bowling attack, supported by Deepak Chahar, Trent Boult, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Reece Topley, and Mitchell Santner.

3. Strong Camaraderie

Mumbai Indians have retained their core, including Rohit Sharma, despite rumors of his departure. The fallout between Hardik Pandya and Rohit Sharma was resolved, especially after the T20 World Cup win in June 2024, boosting team morale.
