Syed Kirmani, 1983 world cup winner met his congratulations to Harmanpreet Kaur and her team after they won the Women world cup defeating South Africa in the final on Sunday, November 2 at Dr. DY Patil Sports Academy, Navi Mumbai.
India made it to the finals of the tournament in 2005 and 2017 but they failed to claim any medals. However, it was the third time when the Women in Blue made a mark in Indian cricket history.
“Brilliant performance by the women’s cricket team; my heartiest congratulations to them! Losing three consecutive games and then making a comeback was a reckless effort by the entire squad. My heartfelt congratulations to all of you. We were praying for your success, and you made the nation proud,” Kirmani was quoted as saying by NDTV.

The campaign by India was not without the failures, because they lost three consecutive league matches to South Africa, Australia, and England. They still believed in their abilities, however, and proceeded to win a decisive match to New Zealand in order to qualify to the semifinals.
A record of 339 runs in the semi-final by India was brought down by Jemimah Rodrigues scampering to 100 in just 100 balls and 88 ball 89 by Harmanpreet.

South Africa asked India to bat first in the high-stakes final after India lost the toss. Deepti Sharma hit a crucial 58, and Shafali Verma, who had entered the competition as Pratika Rawal’s injured replacement, scored an ambitious 87 off 78 balls. The hosts completed their 50 overs at 298/7. Although several believed that India was short by 20–30 runs, South Africa had a difficult task ahead of them due to the strain of a final.

Skipper Laura Wolvaardt was a warrior in bat but some of her teammates were not turning their starts into meaningful runs. When Wolvaardt went home with a 101 with 98 balls, India did not take long to settle the issues. Deepti was exceptional with the ball, when she had five-for. South Africa was bowled out at 246 in 45.3 overs giving India the win by 52 runs.
