Shreyas Iyer of India is assisted off the field with an injury during game three of the One Day International series between Australia and India at Sydney Cricket Ground

Shreyas Iyer, India’s middle-order batsman, expressed gratitude for the tremendous support and attention he received while recovering from a major injury incurred during the recent tour of Australia. The report is a big boost for Team India, as Iyer continues his recovery from a spleen laceration and internal hemorrhage sustained during the third ODI against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground on October 25.

The incident occurred as Iyer caught a pass going backwards from point to dismiss Alex Carey and instantly gripped his rib cage in pain. The 30-year-old was quickly removed off the field and did not return for the rest of the match. Subsequent scans at a Sydney hospital revealed abdominal bleeding and a burst spleen, requiring emergency surgery.

“Sun’s been a great therapy. Grateful to be back, Thanks for all the love and care,” wrote Iyer on his Instagram account on Monday, November 10.

The official statement by the Board of Control in Cricket in India (BCCI) on November 1 indicated that Shreyas Iyer had been released on a hospital bed in Sydney. Both Australian and Indian medical professionals were quoted to be happy with his progress in recovering. The BCCI also said that Iyer had a team doctor Rizwan Khan who stayed with him in his hospital to closely observe his treatment and take proper medical care.

BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia thanked Dr. Kouroush Haghigi and his medical team at Sydney and Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala at India. He also appreciated the fact that they gave Iyer the best care and good time to recover in a vital stage of his life. This joint effort made the cricketer recuperate gradually by the piece over his health issue.

Having been discharged, Iyer remained in Sydney in a number of follow-up sessions with his physicians in order to ascertain whether he was recuperating well before proceeding back to his home. The latest update claims that the right handed batter will be back into India soon but will not be fit to take the field after a few months as he aims at doing a total rehabilitation and getting back to match fitness.

How Iyer performs in time before the next ODI series against South Africa in India remains to be seen. The three match series will start on November 30 in Ranchi, and then to Raipur on December 3 and Visakhapatnam on December 6. He will only be included depending on the rate at which he attends his recovery program.
