Devon Conway, a New Zealand opener, has officially announced his departure of the Chennai Super Kings before the IPL 2026 retentions, with a three-year career with the five-time champions. Conway using social media praised the CSK fans. His exit follows CSK getting ready to restructure its battalion after a miserable IPL 2025.

CSK was the last to achieve in the IPL 2025 that obliged the administration to re-evaluate their full squad arrangement. As the great dynamic has already taken place, such as the historic deal between Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran to the Rajasthan Royals in place of Sanju Samson, the freeing of Conway is another step towards the process.

Despite being one of CSK’s most consistent batters in 2022 and 2023, his drop in form last season landed him on the release list. Conway announced his discharge with a brief note.

“Thank you to all loyal fans of CSK for amazing 3 years support,” he wrote on X.

In 2022, Conway signed with CSK and batted seven times with a total of 252 runs (strike rate 145.66). He was then followed by a brilliant 2023 season where he scored 672 runs with an average of over 51 and ranked three in the tournament. The IPL 2023 final against the Gujarat Titans was significant to CSK winning the title because of his 47 off 25 balls.

Last year Conway was repurchased in an INR 6.25 crore super auction after missing the 2024 season. His 2025 campaign was however not as expected. His highest score is 156 in six innings, which was an average of 26, and a strike rate of 131.09. The team of CSK performed poorly, as they had the lowest powerplay strike rate (137.50), and scored only 693 runs during the first 6 overs of the season.

His exit, together with Rachin Ravindra’s, frees up more than INR 10 crore for CSK ahead of the IPL 2026 auction. The franchise is now looking for young talent. Dewald Brevis is anticipated to play a larger part, while Indian teenagers Ayush Mhatre and Urvil Patel are being nurtured for major roles. With Sanju Samson allegedly joining the group, the top order is likely to become even more formidable. CSK is also expected to release Rahul Tripathi, Deepak Hooda, Vijay Shankar, and Jamie Overton as part of its restructuring plans.
