Shreyas Iyer of India is assisted off the field with an injury during game three of the One Day International series between Australia and India at Sydney Cricket Ground

Indian batsman Shreyas Iyer is scheduled for a crucial scan in mid-December. The results of this examination will determine when he may formally begin rehabilitation at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (COE) in Bengaluru and gradually return to cricket.

Iyer is out of action since he sustained a blow to the rib cage, left lower rib, during the third One-Day International in Sydney against Australia. Early x-rays showed a cut in the spleen, and the spleen was bleeding inside, as an emergency and a long recovery time was needed. On October 27, BCCI announced that he had been under rigorous treatment at Sydney before being discharged after stabilisation. The 31-year old has since achieved a lot of progress though his rejoining is still subject to the clearance of specialists.

In India Today, an Iyer will undergo a scan in the form of an ultrasound, in the 2 nd week of December. The scan will most probably give insight on how his spleen and the tissues surrounding it were repaired. After that, the findings will be analyzed by Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala who is a professional sports medicine expert and has been following up on his case and come up with a detailed rehabilitation plan.

In the early stages of his rehabilitation, Iyer had a USG scan near his home, and Dr. Pardiwala analyzed the images. Seeing his development, the medical team authorized him to resume daily activities and basic isometric exercises. However, cricket-specific training will resume only when the December scan reveals complete internal healing.
