Smriti Mandhana played a fluent innings

Smriti Mandhana, India’s vice-captain, made history on Sunday by becoming the fourth woman batter in the world and the second Indian to score 10,000 international runs. The historic occurrence occurred during the fourth T20I versus Sri Lanka at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram.

Smriti Mandhana went into the match requiring another 27 runs to achieve the feat. Her career total, including Tests, ODIs and T20Is after Saturday’s game is 9,972 runs in 279 international matches. With this record she now stands at an elite list that comprises of Mithali Raj (10,868), Suzie Bates (10, 652) and Charlotte Edwards (10,273). Mandhana is the second Indian woman, after Mithali Raj, to score 10,000 runs for India in international cricket.

Smriti Mandhana swats a maximum

India had already claimed the five-match T20I series 3-0. Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu won the toss and elected field, expecting the dew to assist the chase later in the evening. Mandhana began the innings well in partnership with Shafali Verma at the top, doing all that required for her partner to be aggressive. India strolled through the powerplay, racing to 61 without loss in the first six overs. Mandhana achieved the spectacular feat when she pushed a full delivery through to long-on for her 10,000th international run.

By the conclusion of the tenth over, India had reached 85 without loss, with both openers firmly established. Mandhana finished undefeated on 37 off 31 balls, striking six boundaries, while Shafali Verma maintained her dominant form with 48 off 29 deliveries. The opening stand had already reached fifty, giving the hosts a significant lead in the encounter.
