Pakistan head coach, Jason Gillespie reacts following game one of the Men's One Day International series between Australia and Pakistan

Jason Gillespie resigned as Pakistan’s head coach in December 2024, citing a deterioration in his relationship with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

The famed former Australian speedster was recently approached by a fan about his thoughts on the Pakistan Super League (PSL), to which he answered, “It’s a great competition.” Another fan questioned why he had left Pakistan cricket if he enjoyed the country’s main franchise T20 game. Gillespie answered by speaking candidly about his painful experiences with Pakistan cricket.

“I was coaching the Pakistan Test side. The PCB sacked our senior assistant coach with ZERO communication with me about it- as head coach I found this situation completely unacceptable. There were a number of other issues which left me completely humiliated.”

Gillespie was Pakistan head coach in September 2024 when they were beaten 2-0 by Bangladesh in a home Test series. But the Men in Green bounced back impressively during a Test series against England later that year. Pakistan took the series 2–1 after losing the first test. This was a renaissance in red-ball cricket for the Asian giants. But Gillespie stepped down as head coach in December 2024, ahead of the tour to South Africa.

The Pakistan of Shan Masood sits at the fifth spot in the current World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. They host South Africa for two home Tests in October 2025. The series ended in a 1–1 draw.
