Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has asked the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to reconsider its decision to cancel the scheduled India vs Pakistan Group A match in Colombo during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.
SLC petitioned the PCB to look at this matter with seriousness since the cancellation would greatly affect the business and sporting dynamics of the tournament, especially to the co-host Sri Lanka.
The much-hyped match is a major attraction to the fans and the broadcasters and with no such match it may affect the selling of tickets especially in Colombo where the arch rivals are to play off. Pakistan had threatened to boycott the February 15 match and this raised a question whether the marquee event was going to be hosted as scheduled.

The SLC’s move reflects growing concerns over the economic and cricketing consequences if authorities ultimately cancel the match. According to the SLC, the fixture represents far more than a cricket spectacle, as it drives ticket sales, boosts broadcast demand, and enhances sponsorship value, all of which directly benefit the host nation. The board also reminded Pakistan of Sri Lanka’s support in the past, including hosting tours during critical periods, and urged a similar response this time.
Sri Lanka’s tourism and hotel sectors have already suffered heavy losses due to Pakistan’s failure to play the February 15 match in Colombo. Industry observers reported that several Colombo hotels recorded booking cancellations after expecting a surge in foreign visitors for the high-profile event. These cancellations have directly hurt occupancy projections for the World Cup period.

Since the match is the most important event of the tournament, the International Cricket Council has already threatened Pakistan of the consequences of not attending the event such as potential sanctions and expenses.
As the T20 World Cup commences on February 7, the plea of SLC brings into the limelight the wider impacts of the boycott on the economy of Sri Lanka and losses on the broadcasters.
