KL Rahul of Lucknow Super Giants gestures during the 2024 Indian Premier League match

KL Rahul stands as one of the prominent players active in the Indian Premier League. During his early IPL period from 2013 to 2015 KL Rahul contributed to teams Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Sunrisers Hyderabad in a right-handed classic batting style. Rahul made his IPL return to RCB during IPL 2016 with hopes for success before suffering a terrible shoulder injury which caused his absence from IPL 2017.

KL Rahul rejoined the IPL when Kings XI Punjab acquired him in 2018, and he maintained good form with that team throughout 2018-2022. Major cricket players switched from their original teams to compete in the two new IPL 2022 clubs namely Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants. KL Rahul was one among them.

In the 2022 Indian Premier League, Kannaur Lokesh Rahul joined the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), where he was named captain for the 2023 and 2024 seasons. Rahul shocked everyone, though, when he left the Lucknow Super Giants before the IPL 2025 Mega Auction. The Delhi Capitals then signed him for INR 14 crore, and it was thought that he would take over as the team’s leader after Rishabh Pant left for LSG.

According to recent developments, KL Rahul declined leadership of the Delhi Capitals because he wants to focus exclusively on his batting role and avoid other team responsibilities. The Delhi Capitals expect Axar Patel to serve as their captain for the upcoming 2025 Indian Premier League.

Let’s examine KL Rahul’s batting statistics as a player and skipper to determine what works best for him.

KL Rahul became captain of Kings XI Punjab (Punjab Kings) in 2020 thereby starting his five-year tenure as IPL captain for PBKS in 2020, 2021 and LSG in 2022, 2023 and 2024.

KL Rahul has participated in 64 IPL games as captain, amassing 2,691 runs with a strike rate of 131.97 and an average of 48.92. The highest of KL Rahul’s three hundreds when batting as captain was 132* against RCB in Dubai in his very first game in that role.

KL Rahul celebrates after scoring a half-century

KL Rahul had a very mediocre first three seasons (IPL 2013, 2014, 2015) as a batsman, managing just 382 runs in 18 innings across those three seasons. Rahul made a significant impact in the 2016 tournament when he scored 397 runs in 12 innings while playing for RCB.

Due to a shoulder injury, he missed the 2017 IPL, but he returned strongly for KXIP (now PBKS) in 2018. The batter amassed 500+ runs in two straight seasons before being named captain of PBKS. In 59 IPL innings, Rahul has amassed 1,992 runs as a non-captain with a strike rate of 138.33 and an average of 41.50. Rahul has amassed a century and sixteen half-centuries as a batter, and he is expected to add a sizable amount to this total in the forthcoming IPL season.

Conclusion

KL In the IPL, Rahul has excelled both as a captain and as a non-captain. He’s strike rate increases when he plays only as a batter, but his average numbers in both positions are higher when he is captain.

When he bats without extra pressure, his strike rate increases, which might be very important for the Delhi Capitals. Other batters may be able to play their natural game because of Rahul’s aggressive attitude at the top.
