Hardik Pandya warms up with a run around the Wankhede

The slow over-rate violations have prompted certain captains to incur the punishment of missing out on a game last season. Before the competition, the BCCI changed the rules of play. It was also announced that the captain would not be immediately banned for this offense in the future.

This rule caused Rishabh Pant to miss a recent match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). Hardik Pandya also had to deal with the consequences of his offense from the previous season, which will prevent him from playing in the Mumbai Indians’ (MI) opening match against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). It turns out that the recently updated regulations are comparable to the ICC’s approach, which penalizes leaders for their offenses with demerit points rather than immediately banning them from games. The captain won’t be pardoned, though, because this regulation might affect their match pay. However, the skipper could still be banned for the additional demerit points.

“The captain will be penalised with demerit points but will not face a match ban for the slow over-rate, the Level 1 offence will be charged 25 to 75 percent match fees with demerit points which will be calculated for next three years. A Level 2 offence, if exactly deemed serious, will result in four demerit points,” an internal communique said as quoted by Cricbuzz.

“For every 4 demerit points accumulated, the match referee can impose a penalty, either in the form of a 100 percent fine or additional demerit points. These demerit points could potentially lead to a match ban in the future, but for slow overrate it won’t be a match ban (immediately),” a source from the Know said.

Mumbai Indians’ captain Hardik Pandya celebrates after taking the wicket

Regarding the Hardik Pandya sluggish over-rate offense, it happened during a 2024 season game between the Mumbai Indians (MI) and the Lucknow SuperGiants (LSG). In addition to receiving a one-game suspension for his third offense, Pandya was also required to pay a fine of thirty lakh rupees. In the first game, which will take place at the Chepauk, MI will be led by star batsman Suryakumar Yadav.
