Jasprit Bumrah chats with Gautam Gambhir

Jasprit Bumrah, the speed leader for India, has admitted that head coach Gautam Gambhir takes a very individualized approach. Ahead of India’s forthcoming five-match Test series against England, which kicks off on Friday at Headingley in Leeds, Bumrah provided insights into Gambhir’s coaching technique.

According to the right-arm fast bowler, Gautam Gambhir prefers not to speak to the team in front of others and usually only steps in when called upon. The former India opener is navigating an intriguing stage in Indian cricket, Bumrah continued.

“He is a person who is very individualistic. He will have one-on-one chats with the person where he feels that he is supposed to interfere. You know, when people are going in one direction and he has some thoughts about that. I think he is handling an interesting phase in Indian cricket.”

According to Bumrah, the group has experienced certain changes and is presently going through a transitional stage. The 31-year-old underlined that more patience and poise are required, particularly from the younger players.

“Two tours ago, our team was completely different, and right now it is heading towards a transition. They will now require a lot more patience and a lot more calm with the young players. He is very calm in his approach, and the players are nice and happy.”

Jasprit Bumrah also disclosed that one of the main reasons he never thought about being captain was task management. Shubman Gill, who is leading one of the least experienced Indian teams to play in England, will captain India during the forthcoming tour.

“Before Rohit (Sharma) and Virat (Kohli) retired, during the IPL, I had spoken to the BCCI, that I had discussed workload going forward in a five-match Test series. I have spoken to people who manage my back. We came to the conclusion that we have to be a little more smart, then I called the BCCI that I don’t want to be looked at for the leadership role because I won’t be able to play all the Test matches.”
