India's captain Shubman Gill leaves the middle having lost the toss ahead of play on the opening day of the first cricket test match

The legendary Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar has given new Test captain Shubman Gill some insightful counsel in advance of the forthcoming five-match Test series against England. Tendulkar advised Gill to stay concentrated and not let outside distractions distract him as India gets ready to start the new World Test Championship (WTC) 2025–27 cycle, with the first Test scheduled to start on June 20 at Headingley.

Sachin Tendulkar also stressed that he should support his intuitions and dare to make brash moves without fear of what others will think of them. According to him, human beings will always talk and he admitted that as a captain, one should remain adamant of what has been said on the dressing table and then proceed with it.

“My advice to him would be to take those bold decisions and not to worry about the outside world so long as the decision is taken in the interest of the team,” said Tendulkar as quoted by Cricbuzz.

“Because people will have opinions, and people will say that he is being too attacking or too defensive, or this is not happening, that is not happening. He should do what is in the interest of the team and whatever is discussed in the dressing room.”

The Indian legend said that Shubman Gill should not worry about the outside world. Tendulkar emphasized the importance of having complete support for decisions made in the dressing room with the team’s best interests in mind. He urged Gill to have faith in the process and put the team’s needs ahead of outside viewpoints.

“So that is what matters above anything else, and that is what my advice to him would be – not to worry about the outside world. The dressing room, and whatever decisions he is taking in the interest of the team, are important – and to back that.”

The 25-year-old will lead the Indian Test team as captain for the first time. It’s interesting to note that when Tendulkar assumed the captaincy in 1996, he was only 23 years and 169 days old.

“(They are) different eras altogether, so no point comparing that era to what happened in Indian cricket then and what is happening now. We need to address what is happening now and do it.”
