Ben Stokes of England leaves the field retired hurt during Day Three of the 4th Rothesay Test Match

England fans would have had their hearts in their mouths when Ben Stokes walked off the field while batting in the third session of the fourth Test at Old Trafford in Manchester. The England skipper attempted a reverse sweep off Washington Sundar and was later spotted holding his left leg. However, he continued to bat alongside Joe Root, scoring his 36th half-century in the longest version of the game.

Before the start of England’s 115th over, there was a brief pause in play as Stokes sought fluids to combat what appeared to be cramping. At the end of the over, the seasoned campaigner chose to leave the field. He was seen slowly limping up the stairs to the dressing room. At the time, the southpaw had 66 runs from 116 deliveries. This was the first time he had retired injured in international cricket.

Stokes would bat in the 130th over, after England had lost the wickets of Joe Root, Jamie Smith, and Chris Woakes. He received a standing ovation from the crowd at the stunning venue.

Ben Stokes of England celebrates his half-century during Day 3 of the Fourth Rothesay Test match

Stokes understands the significance of maintaining England’s advantage as long as possible. With some balls staying low and others bouncing awkwardly from a length, the Three Lions would not want to chase down a large total in the fourth innings. They have already taken a 175-plus-run advantage, with Joe Root scoring a brilliant 150 from 248 balls.

On Day 3, Ollie Pope scored a smooth 71 before getting out, and Harry Brook didn’t score much. Joe Root and Ben Stokes proceeded to make 142 runs off 215 deliveries, though Stokes was forced out of the game due to injury. England find themselves in advantageous position in the match leading the series 2-1. By winning in Manchester, they will head home with an unassailable lead prior to the final Test match in The Oval in London.
