The fifth and the final Test match between Team India and England started on the 31 st of July 2014 at the Kennington Oval in London. The home team is currently leading this five-match Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series 2-1. On the first day of the fifth Test, England captain Ollie Pope won the toss and invited India to bat in a cricket match on conditions favorable to the bowlers.

With just 10 runs on the board, Gus Atkinson gave an early lead by getting rid of Yashasvi Jaiswal (2) in the fourth over. After playing cautiously alongside Sai Sudharsan to keep things in check, KL Rahul (14) was thoroughly destroyed by Chris Woakes in the sixteenth over.

Shubman Gill (21) in next and made an effort to play well, but a poor decision made while running between wickets ended his stay. In the final session, Josh Tongue then dismissed Sai Sudharsan (38) and Ravindra Jadeja (9) with two outstanding deliveries, bringing India down to 123/5.

With the lower middle-order batsmen, Karun Nair (52) added a fighting half-century to keep the innings of India alive. The visitors finished with 204/6 at stumps on the first day of the fifth Test on Sunday with him and Washington Sundar (19) batting.

Gus Atkinson Delighted to Feature in Final Test, Shares Thoughts After Day 1 Stumps

Gus Atkinson appeals for a wicket, England vs India, 5th Test, 1st day

English bowler Gus Atkinson, who missed the first four Test matches of the series, expressed his happiness at being back on the pitch after stumps on Day 1 in an interview with BBC Test Match Special. On a green oval track, his comeback stats were 19-7-31-2.

“It has been frustrating, very stop and start. I got back from the Champions Trophy and had a few weeks off, played a few county games and then the Test against Zimbabwe in which I unfortunately got injured.”
