England's Jamie Smith (second left) leaves the field with India's Mohammed Sirajand (left) and Shubman Gill (right) due to rain on day four of the Fifth Rothesay Men's Test

England reached 339 for six in the fourth innings at stumps on Day 4 of the fifth Test against India on Sunday (August 3) at London’s Kennington Oval. They need 35 runs to win on the last day with four wickets in hand.

Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope opened the scoring for England on Sunday (3 August) with an overnight score of 50/1. Visiting bowlers managed to dismiss them in the first session, giving their team hope for the match. Joe Root (105) and Harry Brook (111) then scored stunning centuries, forming a 195-run partnership for the fourth wicket to put England in control of the 374-run chase.

The visitors eventually staged a comeback, reducing the hosts to 339/6, but the game was called off due to poor weather. The match officials called stumps after a while because the weather would not allow the game to continue.

Media member and former Indian cpatain, Sunil Gavaskar speaks during day four of the Fifth Test Match

“At the end of the day, it’s the result that matters. Unless India win this game and level the series, you have to admit that England are the better team. It doesn’t matter how many sessions you’ve won. Yes, 2-2 would be a fair result given India have won more sessions overall.”
