Rohit Sharma of India looks on ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 Final

Rishabh Pant, India’s Test vice-captain, went viral with his Independence Day post. Pant posted a clean, never-before-seen candid footage of India winning the 2025 Champions Trophy in Dubai along with his well wishes and condolences for the event.

The future of Rohit Sharma, whose position in the team has been the focus of growing conjecture, was also subtly hinted at in the film. Despite being a member of the team, Rohit was not included in the final’s playing XI.

Pant uploaded video footage of the celebrations in the dressing room following Ravindra Jadeja hitting the win off the ground and the ecstatic response of Shubman Gill, Rohit, and Mohammed Shami. High-fives and warm embraces followed which passed on before Pant turned his camera towards the rest of the team.

There was also a cute hug between the captain and the coach, Gautam Gambhir and light-hearted friendly teasing on the clip by Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer and Kuldeep Yadav among others. Wicketkeeper-batter was not so serious to miss the opportunity to bully Rohit and at the finishing, when he is discussing the matter with the senior opener, one of the moments is caught on camera.

‘Kya? Retirement lelu? Har baar jeetega toh mai thodi retirement lete rahunga?’ (What was that? Should I retire? I can’t keep taking retirements every time we win!),” the Indian skipper in the video posted on X.

‘Maine nahi bola bhai, hum to chahte hai khelo!’ (I didn’t say it, brother. We want you to keep playing.),” the wicketkeeper-batter replied.

Rohit Sharma of India speaks to teammate Shubman Gill during the ICC Champions Trophy 2025

Nowadays, there is a lot of conjecture surrounding Rohit’s retirement. After leading India to the 2024 T20 World Cup championship, the Nagpur native announced his retirement from Test cricket in May of this year. In the meanwhile, after India defeated New Zealand in the Champions Trophy, speculation swiftly centered on whether he would also abandon ODIs, the format in which he has had the greatest success.

Rohit Sharma has not played professional cricket in a couple of months, as India doesn’t have any ODI matches until October. According to recent speculations, in order to be considered for future ODI selection and, more significantly, the forthcoming 50-over World Cup in 2027, the BCCI may urge both Rohit and Kohli to compete in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
