Irfan Pathan, a former Indian cricket player, has voiced his belief that Shubman Gill, like his predecessors, needs more time to get used to leading the Indian squad. Gill was just named India’s permanent Test captain. In addition to being named vice-captain for the 2025 Asia Cup, he has previously captained India in ODIs.
Irfan thought back on the many eras of Indian cricket when players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and MS Dhoni assumed full-time captaincy. Later on, he came to the conclusion that Indian cricket and the senior selection committee have always been searching for someone who can take the team to the next level and replace those who leave.

Shubman Gill is named the India vice-captain in the coming Asia Cup and Suryakumar Yadav will be the captain. Group A includes India and Pakistan, Oman and the UAE and India will be playing arch-rival Pakistan on September 14 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
Irfan Pathan impressed with his debut captaincy experience where India had drawn the first 2-match series with England in a historic manner. Gill also displayed his best leadership ability, but also excelled with the bat, recording 754 runs in 10 innings, to take home the Player of the Series award.

Next year, India will co-host the T20 World Cup, the next significant ICC competition. There is no immediate threat to Suryakumar Yadav’s position as India’s captain in the game’s shortest format, but it is quite possible that Gill will be the all-format captain by then.
