Ravichandran Ashwin, a Tamil Nadu cricketer, announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL) on August 28, while also expressing an interest in participating in international franchise leagues. He has since been connected to a number of contests.
The famous spinner is reportedly in talks to join the 2025–26 Big Bash League (BBL), which is set to begin on December 14, according to a report published by Cricbuzz on Tuesday, September 2. According to the report, the former Indian stalwart has had discussions with Cricket Australia (CA) CEO Todd Greenberg, who told Cricbuzz:
“To get someone with Ashwin’s credentials to come over here for the BBL will be great at so many levels. He’s a champion cricketer who will bring a lot to the Big Bash and to our cricket summer.”
This article examines three teams that could recruit Ravichandran Ashwin if he plays in the 2025–26 BBL season, as rumors of his possible transfer cause a stir.
1. Melbourne Renegades

At the number one spot are the Melbourne Renegades, who had a pathetic 202425 season and ranked sixth in the table. This could prove to be a significant benefit since the stadium where they play, Docklands Stadium is spin friendly and low scoring in nature.
Adam Zampa, Australia’s top white-ball spinner, who claimed 12 wickets in 10 games the previous season, is already a member of the Renegades. Both bowlers may benefit from the home conditions if Zampa and the former Indian mainstay were paired together to strengthen their spin assault.
The Renegades also selected Jason Behrendorff, the top wicket-taker in the 2024–25 season. The team might be a powerful force in the 2019 season with Behrendorff’s speed and Zampa and Ashwin’s spin combo.
2. Melbourne Stars

The Melbourne Stars are another team that could recruit Ravichandran Ashwin if he decides to play in the 2025-26 BBL. Due to their historical reliance on pacers, the Stars’ spin department has been comparatively weak.
They have already acquired Mitchell Swepson from the Brisbane Heat for the next campaign. The 38-year-old’s addition would increase their spin choices even more. The Melbourne Cricket Ground’s long boundaries would benefit the Indian ace, who offers a broad variety of variations.
Big guns like Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis are already on the team. The off-spinner’s presence would support the leadership team and provide the younger players with invaluable guidance.
3. Adelaide Strikers

The Adelaide Strikers, who finished last after a terrible 2024–25 BBL season, are the last team on the list. Lloyd Pope got 15 wickets at an average of 21.13 and an economy of 9.05 in 10 games with their spin department.
But Pope didn’t have enough help from the other bowlers, which is where Ravichandran Ashwin may be really useful. The 38-year-old, who has played in 333 Twenty20 matches and claimed 317 wickets, can be used at different points in the game and even contribute with the bat.
The Tamil Nadu spinner would be the perfect acquisition to complete Adelaide’s assault as they attempt to recover in the 2025–26 season, given the squad already has pacers like Luke Wood, Hasan Ali, and Jamie Overton.
