Captains of participating teams (L-R) Oman's Jatinder Singh, Hong Kong's Yasim Murtaza, Pakistan's Salman Agha, Afghanistan's Rashid Khan, India's Suryakumar Yadav, Sri Lanka's Charith Asalanka, Bangladesh's Litton Das and UAE's Muhammad Waseem pose with the Asia Cup 2025 Twenty20 international cricket match

The Asia Cup 2025 was introduced with a thrilling match between Afghanistan and Bangladesh on September 16 in Abu Dhabi. Battling to survive in the tournament, Bangladesh produced a spirited overall performance, and won by eight runs over Afghanistan, keeping their campaign alive to throw Group B on its head.

At one time Sri Lanka lead in Group B having been victorious in two out of the two games and are in a good position to qualify. Bangladesh has played all three group matches and it has won two and lost only one match with Sri Lanka.

The latest result has left Afghanistan in a tricky spot, with one win from two games and everything to play for. On the other hand, Hong Kong are out of the race, having lost all three of their fixtures.

The last Group B match between Sri Lanka and Afghanistan is set to decide the fate of all three teams in contention for a Super Four spot. Sri Lanka, with two wins from two games, already hold the advantage with four points on the board.

Still, the Lankans aren’t completely safe. Despite their strong net run rate of +1.546, a heavy defeat — by about 70 runs or with 50 balls to spare — could push them below Bangladesh and knock them out. For Afghanistan, the situation is simple: beat Sri Lanka, and they’ll qualify ahead of Bangladesh on net run rate.

As things stand, Sri Lanka qualify with any win or even a narrow defeat. But if Afghanistan pulls off a big win, they will advance instead. Bangladesh, which has already played all its games, can only progress if Sri Lanka beats Afghanistan.

The Tigers can also qualify if Afghanistan beats Sri Lanka by more than 70 runs or with about 50 balls remaining. On Thursday, September 18, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan will face off in Abu Dhabi in the most important game of the tournament.

The Asia Cup 2025 in Group A has taken shape very clearly after the initial matches. Two easy victories already put India straight to the Super Fours, and another defeat put Oman out of the tournament.

That leaves Pakistan and UAE fighting for the remaining spot in the group. Both sides have one win and one loss so far, which makes their clash in Dubai on September 17 a virtual knockout.

The equation is simple: the winner qualifies for the Super Fours along with India, while a defeat will end Pakistan’s campaign and push UAE through to the next round.
