One of the senior officials of BCCI has given some information regarding the future of Mohammed Shami in international cricket. The veteran pacer played his last international game in 2025 champions trophy final where he scored nine wickets in five matches. But, his recent home engagement of East Zone in the quarter final of North Zone was not satisfactory because he only scored one wicket at the cost of 136 runs in the 34 overs.
The official has noted that the pace and fitness of Mohammed Shami have declined a little due to age and that the 35-year-old needs to put more effort to rejuvenate himself. He also added that regular performances in the IPL have the potential of keeping Shami in the race of a comeback on the national level though he will need to show that he is not only sharp but capable of lasting long to stay in the game that is very competitive.

“At this moment, it’s getting increasingly tougher for Shami to return to the Indian team. In the Duleep game too, he wasn’t too impressive, barring one odd spell,” stated the BCCI official, as quoted by The Telegraph.
“Besides, he isn’t getting any younger, while pace-wise, too, he didn’t seem to be at his best in Duleep. But to continue in the IPL, he has to play a decent amount of domestic games,” the official added.

India delivered the most impressive performance in the 2023 World Cup, with Mohammed Shami leading the bowling attack. He claimed 24 wickets in just seven games, becoming the tournament’s highest wicket-taker. His sharp spells played a major role in India’s dominance and eventual triumph in the final.
However, Shami’s career has faced several setbacks since then because of recurring injuries, loss of rhythm, and fitness issues.
During the 2025 IPL season with Sunrisers Hyderabad, Shami struggled to find his rhythm. He took only six wickets and conceded runs at an economy rate of 11.23. The campaign turned out disappointing for both Shami and his team, as SRH won only six of their 14 league matches, while one was abandoned due to rain.
