Shubman Gill of India just batting partner Ravindra Jadeja as he celebrates reaching his century during day one of the 2nd Rothesay Test Match

India had another outstanding day on Day 2 of the second Test against England on Thursday, July 3, at Edgbaston in Birmingham. At the beginning of the second day, the visitors were on 310/5 when they resumed their innings.

Contents
1. Third 200-plus stand for sixth wicket or lower for India in England2. First player to score 2000 plus runs and 100 plus wickets in WTC3. Most runs for India in an innings after the fall of fifth wicket4. Highest individual score by an Indian captain in Tests

They achieved a fantastic first innings total of 587 by building on their strong start from the opening day. In addition to captain Shubman Gill’s historic double hundred, Ravindra Jadeja (89) and Washington Sundar (42) made significant contributions. After that, they tried their hand at England for 20 overs.

The bowlers took charge and put England in a vulnerable position by taking early wickets. The hosts were down by 510 runs at the end of the day, scoring 77/3. Mohammed Siraj took one wicket while Akash Deep, who replaced Jasprit Bumrah, took two.

Akash Deep of India, is congratulated for taking the wicket

To further dominate this Test, India will try to take more wickets and establish an early lead in the opening session on the third day. Having said that, India set four records or milestones on Day 2 of the current second Test.

1. Third 200-plus stand for sixth wicket or lower for India in England

Ravindra Jadeja of India is congratulated for his half-century by Shubman Gill of India during Day Two of the Second Rothesay Test match

Shubman Gill and Ravindra Jadeja formed an outstanding partnership in the first innings, which put the hosts in a commanding position. For the sixth wicket, they put up a 203-run partnership. Only three times in Test matches in England have India reached a 200-plus stand for the sixth wicket or more.

The first time this happened was in 2018, when both KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant scored hundreds in the second innings. The second incident involved Pant and Jadeja, who both scored a ton of runs in the first innings in Birmingham in 2022. All things considered, it is just the second 200-plus stand at Edgbaston for the sixth wicket or less.

2. First player to score 2000 plus runs and 100 plus wickets in WTC

Ravindra Jadeja brings out his trademark sword celebration

In the World Test Championship (WTC), India’s Ravindra Jadeja became the first player to reach 2000 runs and take 100 wickets.

Ravindra Jadeja has amassed 2010 runs at an average of 37.92 from 41 games, with 13 half-centuries and three hundreds. He has taken 132 wickets at an average of 25.95 with the ball, including six five-wicket hauls. He scored 89 runs in the opening innings of the current second Test match as well, forming a vital partnership with Shubman Gill.

3. Most runs for India in an innings after the fall of fifth wicket

India’s captain Shubman Gill (R) celebrates his century on the opening day of the second cricket test match

In the first innings of the current Test match, India have lost their fifth wicket for 211 runs. They finished the innings with 587 after adding 376 more runs to the total. This is the first time that they have added the most runs in an innings following the fifth wicket falling.

The last best example occurred in a Kolkata Test match against the West Indies in 2013. At that time, they had fallen to 83/5 before adding 370 more runs to reach 453.

4. Highest individual score by an Indian captain in Tests

Shubman Gill of India walks off after being dismissed for 269 during Day Two of the 2nd Rothesay Test Match

In Test matches, Shubman Gill set a new record for the greatest individual score scored by an Indian captain. Gill achieved a record-breaking double hundred with 269 runs off 387 balls.

He broke Virat Kohli’s record with his lengthy knock, which currently stands as the greatest score by an Indian skipper in Test cricket. When he hit an undefeated 254 against South Africa in Pune in 2019, the former skipper held the record.
