His statement occurred ahead of the 2025-27 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. On May 7, Sharma posted the following in an Instagram story:

“Hello everyone, I would just like to share that I am retiring from Test cricket. It’s been an absolute honor to represent my country in whites. Thank you for all the love and support over the years. I will continue to represent India in the ODI format.”

Shubman Gill was named India’s new Test captain following Sharma’s red-ball retirement. After a five-match away series in England that concluded in a 2-2 draw, his stay got underway.
