Jasprit Bumrah and Brett Lee in Test Cricket

Jasprit Bumrah is one of the most consistent and reliable fast bowlers in all formats in India since his debut. Bumrah was initially regarded as a white-ball specialist but he quickly quieted down those that doubted his capabilities when it comes to red-ball cricket. He debuted in South Africa in 2018 in the Test and immediately introduced his pace, movement, and control. He has over the years become one of the most reliable bowlers in overseas conditions in India and has been known to deliver match winning performances on important Tests.

Bumrah played his 50th Test match in October 2025, against the West Indies at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. The success made him one of the best pacer in India. The regularity of his performance has seen him being compared to a number of greats that include the former Australian fast bowler Brett Lee. We examine this feature to a closer in this feature where we consider the record of Bumrah and that of Lee by the time they had both played 50 Tests.

He has performed strongly against great teams with 74, 64 and 38 wickets respectively against England, Australia and South Africa. He has become the most solitary strike bowler in India because of his capability to deliver at all conditions.

Brett Lee in contrast had 197 wickets with an average of 31.48 in 50 Test. Although he was a match-winner to Australia, his statistics were lower than those of Bumrah. His greatest performances were against the West Indies, on which he took 46 wickets in 9 games, but lost the rhythm against England and South Africa at that stage.
