Afghanistan starter Rahmanullah Gurbaz hit three consecutive sixes in the second Super Over of the T20 World Cup 2026 encounter against South Africa on Wednesday, February 11, at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. When Afghanistan needed 24 runs from the last four deliveries, the wicketkeeper-batsman stepped in.
After Keshav Maharaj removed Mohammad Nabi for a two-ball duck, Gurbaz retained his nerve to hit the spinner over long-off, keeping his team in the game. The right-hander then hit two more sixes to long-on and deep mid-wicket, leaving everyone in shock. Maharaj then fumbled by bowling a wide delivery to keep the ball out of the batter’s sight. He next produced a match-winning delivery similar to the last one, which Gurbaz hit straight to one of the fielders in the inner ring. Finally, Afghanistan had an anticlimax.

Earlier, South Africa had made 187 for six from their 20 overs after half-centuries for Ryan Rickelton (61 off 28) and uinton de Kock (59 off 41). Azmatullah Omarzai picked up three wickets and skipper Rashid Khan two.
Afghanistan in turn surpassed the same total of 187 before being dismissed for 19.4 overs. Rahmanullah Gurbaz was the top scorer for 42 balls, firing seven maximums and four boundaries in his 84 runs. Player of the Match Lungi Ngidi was the leading wicket-taker for the Proteas, claiming 3/26.
Afghanistan in doubt for a Super 8 place in the T20 World Cup 2026

Afghanistan’s place in the T20 World Cup 2026 is now under threat as a consequence of the blow. It was their second loss, after a five-wicket defeat to New Zealand in its first match.
Afghanistan’s two remaining group-stage fixtures are versus the United Arab Emirates and Canada in Delhi and Chennai on February 16 and 19, respectively.

South Africa, on the other hand, sit second in Group D with a win over Canada by 57 runs and victory over Afghanistan.
