Shubman Gill is the front-runner to be named India’s next Test captain, according to reports. Even though he is being hailed as a future superstar, he is still too young to question head coach Gautam Gambhir’s choices.
According to reports, India head coach Gautam Gambhir has asked the BCCI for complete control over the team’s operations after captain Rohit Sharma and seasoned batsman Virat Kohli withdrew from Test cricket.
As per a report by Dainik Jagran, Gambhir entered the setup with the goal of eradicating Indian cricket’s celebrity culture. His first action was to implement the 10-point diktat, which required all players to play domestic cricket whenever possible and act in a specific way while on tour. Developing a pool of players for the team who would be long-term national assets was the second stage.
It has been believed that Gambhir was crucial in the phase-out of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma from red-ball cricket. On May 12, Kohli answered the phone after Rohit declared his retirement from Test cricket on May 7. Days before India’s squad was chosen for the England tour, Gambhir and Ajit Agarkar, the chairman of selectors, told them that the team management intended to proceed with a younger roster.
“In order to stop a repeat of the home-series defeat against New Zealand and the debacle in Australia, Gambhir has requested the board for full autonomy,” the report added.
In recent years, Indian cricket has been governed by its captains. Greg Chappell, the head coach of India at the time, is said to have been instrumental in Sourav Ganguly’s dismissal from the team in 2005, the last time an Indian captain was fired.
Rahul Dravid-Rohit and Ravi Shastri-Kohli have developed strong coach-captain bonds and helped the country succeed in Indian cricket in recent years.
According to the research, Gambhir’s situation was unique. Since Rohit, Kohli, and Ravichandran Ashwin have all retired, he will probably be the only one driving the team. He had as much influence on policy-making, squad selection, and other team-related issues as the captain.
The report goes on to say that since Shubman is only 25 years old, he is probably always going to agree with Gambhir. Gambhir’s calls could have been answered by Jasprit Bumrah, but the seasoned seamer is apparently out of the running for captaincy because he needs to carefully manage his workload.
