When Sourav Ganguly was President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) from 2019 to 2022, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma were Indian cricket’s hottest properties. However, three years later, the two pillars of the game have retired from two formats – Tests and Twenty20 Internationals – and their future in ODI cricket is unknown.

Rumor adds that Kohli and Rohit are about to quit the 50-over format after a three game ODI series against Australia Down Under in October. These three games take place in Perth, Adelaide and Sydney on October 19, 23 and 25 respectively.

Nevertheless, Ganguly has mentioned that such consideration has not been made known to him and only performance is what should be the deciding factor as to how long they can persist in yielding to the ODI cricket brand. Kohli is the third highest run scorer in ODIs now. Nevertheless, Rohit has highest personal score in the format.

“I’m not aware of this, can’t comment on this,” Ganguly was quoted as saying during the AWL Agri Business Ltd Event.

India’s captain Rohit Sharma (L) and teammate Virat Kohli run between the wickets during the ICC Champions Trophy one-day international (ODI) semi-final cricket match

The former India captain lauded Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma for their incredible contributions to the Indian side in ODI cricket throughout the years.

“It’s difficult to say. Whoever does well will play. If they do well, they should continue. Kohli’s one-day record is phenomenal, even Rohit Sharma’s. Both of them are phenomenal in white-ball cricket,” said.
