Team India skipper Shubman Gill made history on Thursday, July 3, with a brilliant double century on Day 2 of the second Test against England at Edgbaston in Birmingham. In the process of reaching his 269 off 387 balls, the 25-year-old batter set several records.
Shubman Gill continued his excellent form and easily passed his first double hundred as he resumed his batting at 114 on Day 2. Over 500 minutes were spent in the crease by the right-handed batter, who smashed three sixes and thirty fours.
The captain also made appearances in two large stands throughout his long knock. He added 144 for the seventh wicket with Washington Sundar and 203 for the sixth wicket with Ravindra Jadeja (89). By the time of his dismissal, Shubman Gill had broken the record for the highest Test score by an Indian captain, surpassing Virat Kohli (254*).

Team India’s bowlers strike early after Shubman Gill’s double hundred
On Day 2, India resumed their first innings at Edgbaston on 310-5 and finished with 587 in 151 overs. This time, there was no unexpected batting collapse, unlike the two innings in the first Test at Headingley in Leeds.
The bowlers took over and dismissed England to 25-3 in eight overs after Gill and company had helped India to a commanding score. After replacing Jasprit Bumrah, Akash Deep dismissed Ben Duckett (0) and Ollie Pope (0) with consecutive deliveries in the innings’ third over. Pope tried to knock one past the line at second slip but was caught, and Gill expertly held Duckett at third slip.
England were three down and in serious trouble when Zak Crawley (19) nicked one off Mohammed Siraj to first slip. In order to prevent England from losing any more wickets, Joe Root (18) and Harry Brook (30) were used. On Day 2, the home team was 77-3 at the end.
