The hosts lost the toss and therefore, were in the first innings of the series decider that was won by a staggering 231 for five in 20 overs. Hardik Pandya (63) and Tilak Varma (73) hit blazing half-tonys and Sanju Samson (37) and Abhishek Sharma (34) came to the rescue in the batting department. At the post-match presentation ceremony, South Africa captain Aiden Markram admitted that it was a difficult loss for them, and that chasing 230 required a team effort from their batting unit. Reflecting on the setback, he stated:
“Tough loss. 230 was always going to require a near-perfect chase. Quinny (de Kock) and top-3 set it up perfectly for us but in the middle just could not take the momentum to forward. Lessons to learn again as a group and with us playing a few games here in the World Cup, those lessons should be valuable. We want to expose Brevis to spin, he makes six-hitting against spin look quite easy. In the middle order, there is generally not too much of an order and that is exactly what we did today.”
Markram continued:
“Some valuable lessons that we’ve learned in the last two weeks against a really good opposition that played really well, you doff your caps towards them and look internally. It was a little bit of experimenting happening this series, combinations and certain positions for certain players. We’ve got the answers now and come the World Cup it will be much more settled.”
