India vs England 1st Test

On the third day of the first Test against England on Sunday (June 22), Team India scored 90 for two at the stumps. With Harry Brook and Ollie Pope in the middle, the hosts started with an overnight score of 209/3.

Pope finished his century in the morning when Prasidh Krishna removed him, giving India its first breakthrough on Sunday. The hosts subsequently reached 465 in their first innings thanks to a spectacular hit of 99(112) from Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (20), Jamie Smith (40), and Chris Woakes (38). Despite several missed catches in his bowling, Jasprit Bumrah had an amazing spell, taking five wickets.

B Sai Sudharsan started solidly in his second innings on debut, England vs India, 1st Test

Team India then began their second innings with a six-run advantage, but got off to a bad start with the early departure of Yashasvi Jaiswal (4). The innings was then steadied by a 66-run partnership between debutant Sai Sudharsan (30) and KL Rahul (47*). In the 21st over, Ben Stokes dismissed Sudharsan, ending the dangerous stand. Then, on the third day, Rahul and Shubman Gill (6) moved the visiting team to 90/2 and increased the lead to 96 before stumps.

“Nice position”- Ollie Pope after Day 3 of ENG vs IND 1st Test

Ollie Pope of England smiles as he leaves the field with Shoaib Bashir after day three of the 1st Rothesay Test between England and India at Headingley

Speaking to media after stumps on Day 3, English batsman Ollie Pope said the first Test is closely poised, with India leading by six runs midway through. According to ESPNcricinfo, he stated:

“It’s a long series, and there’s a lot to be done in this game still as well. [A deficit of] 40 or 50, just from a mindset, might have given them a little bit more confidence, knowing that they’ve got that head-start, but playing the game from an even playing field felt quite important. We got those two wickets; they played nicely. KL Rahul batted really well.”

Ollie Pope

“It’s important for us to get some early breakthroughs. It obviously would’ve been nice to get maybe one or two more wickets this evening, but I think the pitch is still playing really well. It’s obviously such a quick-scoring ground, with the lightning [fast] outfield. It’s obviously an important session tomorrow morning, and the game is poised in a pretty nice position.”
