Sanju Samson of India and Shai Hope of West Indies shake hands following the ICC Men's T20 World Cup India & Sri Lanka 2026 Super 8 match

Team India won the last Super Eight match of the T20 World Cup 2026 with a small margin of five wickets against West Indies on Sunday, March 1, at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Consequently, they were in a position to get into the semi-final where they will take on England on Thursday (March 5) at the Wankheit stadium in Mumbai.

West Indies had won the first in the contest and put in a good tally of 195/4 after winning the toss and batting first. Roston Chase (40), Rovman Powell (34) and Jason Holder (37) batted aggressively on behalf of the Caribbean side in the batting department. The ball was picked by Jasprit Bumrah who took two wickets in the hands of the hosts.

Sanju Samson then smashed a knock of 97 and that too with 50 on the board, to get India across the finish line in the must-win match. The Kerala batter came to the challenge in the tension tussle and performed a typifying show with the bat. His game winning innings consisted of four sixes and 12 fours.

“We were a few runs short” – Shai Hope after West Indies’ loss vs India in T20 World Cup 2026

Shai Hope is the captain of the West Indies during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup India & Sri Lanka 2026 Super 8 – match

West Indies captain Shai Hope discussed the defeat to India during the post-match presentation, saying:

“We were a few runs short. Probably didn’t start off well with the bat, but, bowling well helps in defending something like 190 in these conditions. Sanju Samson played a crucial knock. Jasprit Bumrah makes things happen. He is one of their main bowlers. When called upon, he does a job. Still, we should have done a better job.”

He added:

“I thought we were good as a bowling unit. I must give the guys credit. Matthew Forde got wickets in the power play, Akeal Hosein as well. Just that we didn’t get over the line today. You never want to end at this stage! One more game, and you are in the semis, and then, in the final. The aim is to win. It’s not a case of rocking up and getting a win, we have to play hard and better cricket. We tried, but, came up short.”
