Virat Kohli, a veteran Indian batter, established a reputation of creating some of his best knocks against Australia in the Test cricket. He had 2,232 runs off in 30 matches against them with a batting average of 43.76 with nine centuries and five half-centuries.

Kohli improved his performance when it came to playing in Australia. During 18 Tests Down Under, he scored 1,542 runs at a very high average of 46.72 with a total of seven and four fifties. He began the intense rivalry at the start of his maiden tour 2011-12 when he hit 300 runs and a hundred and one half-century.

In 2024-25, Kohli made one last Test visit to Australia. He started well in Perth with an untainted-hundred but he failed to repeat the same performance later because, in nine innings, he scored 190 runs at a rate of 23.75. The former captain declared his retirement in Test cricket before India went on a tour of England in 2025.

Kohli scored centuries in both innings in his first Test as captain in-game at Adelaide. His 141 against 175 balls in the second innings was also not forgotten when India was pursuing 364.

He doubled the score he made with Murali Vijay aiming to place India in a great position but they were unable to win. Kohli displayed defiant manner which would be the aggressive leadership style even in defeat.

2. (147) Sydney, 2015

Just after MS Dhoni’s sudden retirement, Kohli took charge as captain in Sydney and delivered a special 147 from 230 balls. He looked in command, adding 141 runs with KL Rahul.

He batted with great authority, hitting 20 boundaries in his innings. Kohli also made 46 in the second innings to help India draw the Test.

One of the best knocks by Kohli was done at the MCG on the Boxing Day Test they played in 2014 with a score of 169 out of 272 balls. He had 18 fours in his innings which was marked with perseverance against a fierce Australian attack.

He formed a great partnership with Ajinkya Rahane (147) in a 262 run partnership. Kohli too contributed 54 during the second innings when India struggled to draw.

4. (123) Perth, 2018

In 2018 in Perth, Kohli was on the frontline with a stylish 123 off 257 balls. He hit 13 boundaries and a six against a hard pitch and he was very disciplined.

Alliances with Pujara, Rahane and Vihari maintained India in the fray; however, he was beaten up by Pat Cummins at the slip. India lost the Test by 146 and were bowled out at 283.

The first hundred of Virat Kohli was at Adelaide in the 2011-12 tour of Australia. He entered at 87/4 and demonstrated an extreme maturity, and made 116 out of 213 balls, including 11 fours and a six.

He contributed one important 114 runs in the company of Wriddhiman Saha, as he struggled to save India. His attempt had been frustrated as India was beaten out by 272 and lost by 298 runs.
