India's Mohammed Siraj celebrates the wicket of England's Ben Stokes on day three of the Second Rothesay Men's Test at Edgbaston

India had a strong start on Day 3 of the second Test at Edgbaston. After captain Shubman Gill’s record 269 and an outstanding bowling display on Day 2, India was already in a great position. In the day’s second over, top pacer Mohammed Siraj took out Ben Stokes and Joe Root in quick succession.

The right-arm seamer first dismissed the veteran English hitter, Root. Siraj produced a delivery on the leg stump line from around the wicket, tempting Root to look. After moving slowly and striking Root’s bat, the ball reached Rishabh Pant without incident. The former captain of England left for 22.

In the subsequent delivery, Ben Stokes was hit by a short-pitched delivery outside off while he was playing his first ball. With a slight advantage, the England captain gave Pant another catch behind the stumps. Crucially, it was Stokes’ first Test cricket golden duck. The delivery was smashed down the ground for a boundary by Jamie Smith, who was facing the hattrick-ball.

England on back foot early on Day 3

Shubman Gill of India walks off after being dismissed for 269 during Day Two of the 2nd Rothesay Test Match

Meanwhile, India dominated Day 2 of the Test match, first with the bat (due to Gill’s double century) and then with the ball. After taking two wickets in two deliveries late on Day 2, Akash Deep—who had taken Jasprit Bumrah’s position in the starting lineup—made an impression before Siraj had Zak Crawley caught at slip.

The visitors, who have now sent five English hitters back into the pavilion, will feel confident of destroying the tail soon. As of this writing, England is 478 runs down and their score is 109/5 with Jamie Smith (14) and Harry Brook (42*) at the crease.
