In the Indian Premier League (IPL), Dhoni continues to play. Ruturaj Gaikwad, the team’s regular captain, injured his elbow after playing the first five games, so Dhoni returned as CSK captain for the 2025 IPL.

The five-time champions struggled this season, finishing last and claiming their first wooden spoon in league history. They won only four of 14 league games and ended at the bottom of the standings. Over 13 innings, Dhoni scored 196 runs at a strike rate of 135.17.

Pacer Khaleel Ahmed has discussed the possibility of playing in the 2025 IPL with MS Dhoni in the role of leader. He told me that at the training camp he had requested the experienced wicketkeeper to give him some tips and he had altered his practice.

Khaleel added that even after facing negative outcomes, he responded the same way, showing that Dhoni gave him total freedom on the ground. He shared this in an interview with Revsportz:

“It is an absolute honor. He (MS Dhoni) was there during the preparatory camp, 25 days before the start of the IPL and I went to him to personally get clarity on how I see myself in the team so he gave me tips on how I can improve my skills and asked me to practice my in-swinger. I did that continuously for 20 straight days as per his instruction.

“And playing with him is like — he lets me make my own decisions on the ground. At times when I have approached him asking if I can bowl a certain way in a certain situation, he has shown that confidence in me and let me play my own game. And then no matter the result, his reaction has remained the same.”

In the 2025 IPL, Khaleel ranked as CSK’s second-highest wicket-taker. He took 15 wickets in 14 innings, maintaining an economy rate of 9.57.
