Rishabh Pant responded epically to Sunil Gavaskar’s’superb, superb, superb’ compliment following his spectacular century in India’s first innings of the five-match Test series against England. After reaching his seventh century in the longest format, he proceeded to provide an honest assessment of his feelings.
After Sunil Gavaskar’s comments shifted from “stupid, stupid” to “superb, superb,” Indian batter Cheteshwar Pujara asked Pant how he felt. During the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy’s Boxing Day Test match against Australia, Sunil Gavaskar made the on-air statement, “Stupid, stupid, stupid,” after the southpaw made a careless stroke off Scott Boland’s bowling to give away his wicket at a critical point in the match.

“The feeling is the same as how you’re feeling at this time. It feels extremely good when you work on your weaknesses and convert setbacks into comebacks. That was the thought process. I was lucky to have overcome my weaknesses. Hard work, focus and discipline were massively involved. It was quite an exciting phase for me.”

In the first innings of the current Test, Pant was one of three Indian centurions. The other two hitters were Shubman Gill (147 off 227) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (101 off 159). The hosts’ two best players were Ben Stokes (4/66 in 20 overs) and Josh Tongue (4/86 in 20 overs). In 113 overs, India was ultimately knocked out for 471.
