Virat Kohli of India looks on during game three of the One Day International series between Australia and India

During the third and the final ODI in Sydney Cricket Ground, Virat Kohli proved to be a genius in the field once again through an amazing reflex catch. His harsh stroke rejected Matthew Short and provided India with a long-needed break through in the middle overs. After Mitchell Marsh won the toss, Australia, who had already taken the series 2-0, decided to take the first turn in the bat. The hosts introduced Nathan Ellis and India gave opportunities to Kuldeep Yadav and Prasidh Krishna.

The highlight was the beautiful scene in the 23 rd over where Washington Sundar enticed Short into a sweep shot which was of a risky nature. The batter struck it a hard blow at square leg, but Kohli was ready, and he dropped forward and made a perfect catch as he went backwards. The sporting performance made everyone in awe and once again showed that despite years of playing at the highest level, Kohli is still fit and has world-class reflexes.

Virat Kohli breaks into elite list for most international catches as fielder

India’s Virat Kohli (L) speaks with his captain Shubman Gill during the third one-day international (ODI) men’s cricket match

Interestingly, in this catch, the 36-year old became one of the most international catches made by a fielder. Placing fifth with 338 catches, the renowned Indian cricketer has become a part of the list of superstars including Mahela Jayawardene, Ricky Ponting, Ross Taylor, and Jacques Kallis. In the meantime, he and Kallis are at par in catches.

Meanwhile, the hosts got off to a good start, and in eight overs, opener Mitchell marsh and Travis head had hit 50 runs. The first breakthrough came by Mohammed Siraj who sacked Head on grounds of 29. After this, Axar Patel bowled Marsh out in 41. And fresh off a solid fifty in the second ODI, Short appeared impressive in his 30-run stay anchoring with Matt Renshaw as the hosts hit 124/2 at the 22nd over. Nevertheless, India got their third wicket courtesy of the brilliant performance of Kohli. At the end of the 27th over, Australia’s total was 140/3, with Renshaw and Alex Carey at the crease.
