India batsman MS Dhoni picks up some runs during day one of the 4th Investec Test match

MS Dhoni, former India captain, delivered a gutsy performance in the 2014 Test against England at Old Trafford in Manchester. On Wednesday, July 23, the fourth Test of the two teams’ current series is set to start at the same location.

India was having a lot of problems in the first innings of the 2014 Test match. The visitors were left reeling at 8/4 after the top order crumbled, making it a nightmare. Under tremendous pressure, MS Dhoni entered at number six. Interestingly, he entered the game in the sixth over of the innings. The fresh ball moving about presented a challenge to Dhoni. He led from the front, though, and maintained his composure while playing a captain’s knock.

The former captain struck a valiant half-century to take the lead. In his knock, he hit 15 boundaries and scored 71 runs off 133 balls. MS Dhoni shown tenacity and grit by remaining at the crease for 200 minutes. Along the way, he dodged several outside edges and LBW yells. He was well-supported by Ravichandran Ashwin, who made 40 runs.

India was ultimately bowled out for 152 in just 46.4 overs, despite his best efforts. Nearly half of the runs were scored by the wicketkeeper-batter. From the beginning to the end, England dominated the match. The visitors lost by an innings and fifty-four runs.

In 2005, Dhoni made his format debut in Chennai against Sri Lanka. He got a 30 from 54 balls in India’s lone batting effort. The veteran later played for the nation in 90 Test matches.

He amassed 4876 runs at an average of 38.09 across those games, including 33 half-centuries and six hundreds. During his Test career, he also made 38 stumpings and took 256 catches.
