A former India captain, MS Dhoni was returned with a massive welcome in Madurai when he came to open the newly constructed cricket stadium. Crowds clapped and cheered as the great cricketer came to the ground to swing few balls. At some point of the event, a young wicketkeeper touched Dhoni on the feet as a sign of respect and the touching incidence soon became viral on social media.
The entry of Dhoni to the airport also caused a massive buzz. Thus thrilled fans came out in large numbers to have a glimpse of their hero, and policemen could be seen controlling the audience. Ranchi born star did not show any fancy appearance; he was dressed in a black T-shirt, jeans and glasses.

— ` (@WorshipDhoni) October 9, 2025 The latest stadium is called Velammal Cricket Stadium. The construction of it was done in partnership with the Velammal Education Trust and the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA). The new plant will enhance the infrastructure of cricketing in Tamil Nadu.
Reports indicated that the stadium has the current capacity of seating 73,000 spectators and that the capacity might be increased by 20,000 in future. It will also be hosting some of the domestic tournaments in the near future such as the Ranji Trophy and Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) and this will provide young players with an international platform to demonstrate their talents.
MS Dhoni Officially Retired from International Cricket in August 2020

The famous wicketkeeper-batsman announced his retirement in international cricket on August 15, 2020. MS Dhoni has played 98 T20Is, 90 Tests and 350 ODIs in total in the Indian cricket team between 2004 and 2019, before he retired. He also led 50-over world cup, the T20 world cup, and champions trophy wins to the Men in Blue.
Nonetheless, Dhoni continues to play in the IPL and has set multiple tournament records. He is the most capped player and has led the most IPL games. The veteran is also the joint-most successful skipper in IPL history, alongside Rohit Sharma, having led the Chennai Super Kings to title victory five times.
