The ex-India captain Sourav Ganguly has expressed a loud support of Mohammed Shami returning to the national team claiming that he has no justification or reason to disregard the Bengal pacer. Ganguly complimented the consistency and fitness of Shami and told him that he still has a lot to give to Indian cricket, with his recent performance in domestic cricket.
Shami is not a part of the national setup since the champions trophy 2025 but still has been playing impressively in the Ranji trophy. The 35 year old has been instrumental in Bengal first two games in this season, having taken 15 wickets and assisted his team in winning two back to back games. His rhythm and control have impressed even though he has not managed to get any wicket against Tripura.

Sourav Ganguly also pointed out that experience such as that of Shami is good, most particularly in Tests. The ex-skipper is convinced that a bowler of that caliber and fully fit and performing is supposed to be included back in the Indian squad. His stamina and readiness to play a match is not in question as Shami has already bowled 91 overs in only three games this season.
“Shami is bowling exceptionally well. He is fit and we saw in the three Ranji Trophy matches, where he’s won Bengal on his own. I’m sure the selectors are watching and there is a communication between Mohammad Shami and the selectors. But if you ask me, in terms of fitness and skill, it’s the Mohammad Shami we know of. So, I really don’t see any reason why he can’t keep playing Test matches, One-day cricket and T20 cricket for India. Because that skill is enormous,” said Ganguly as quoted by The Indian Express.

The experienced pacer had ankle surgery following the 2023 World Cup, where he took 24 wickets at an average of 10.70. His outstanding performance was vital in India’s victorious campaign. Mohammed Shami recently addressed the continuing selection debate, following his match-winning performance of 5/38, which helped Bengal win the Ranji Trophy by 141 runs.
“Yes, I knew this question would come. I’m always in controversy anyway. You people have already made me the villain! What else can I do or say? In today’s world, social media twists everything. My job is to perform well. Wherever I get an opportunity, I’ll give my best. The rest is up to God. Bengal is my home. Every match I play for Bengal is like a memory for me,” Shami said.
