India's Rohit Sharma walks onto the field to open the innings in the first one-day international cricket match

Rohit Sharma, a veteran Indian batsman, has had a rollercoaster 2025. The year began on a bad note as he was dropped from the starting XI due to poor form in India’s fifth and final Test against Australia in Sydney in early January, which India eventually lost.

1. Rohit Sharma eclipsed Shahid Afridi to become the batsman with most sixes in ODIs2. Fourth skipper to win Player of the Match in an ICC final in history3. Third Indian to the 50-centuries mark4. Overtook Virat Kohli and Kumar Sangakkara to top the chart for most ODI hundreds in Australia by a visiting player5. Second captain to win ICC trophies in ODI and T20I formats

But it wasn’t long before the Mumbai batsman turned things around as he helped India to the 2025 Champions Trophy title on March 9, beating New Zealand in the final. On 7 May, Rohit announced his retirement from Test cricket after a 67-Test career during which he scored 4,301 runs with the help of 12 centuries and 18 half-centuries.

Another major incident happened months later before the ODI series against Australia in October when Rohit was replaced from captaincy and Shubman Gill was appointed as the skipper. Although India went down 2-1, Rohit impressed and clinched the Player of the Series award.

He featured during the series against South Africa later, and turned out in Mumbai’s recent match in the current Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26, where he made 155 not out and scored nought in two innings.

Even as 2025 ends, Rohit Sharma has been a massive influence over the sport having faced many roadblocks. On that subject, here are the five records and milestones from the 38-year-old’s 2025.

1. Rohit Sharma eclipsed Shahid Afridi to become the batsman with most sixes in ODIs

In the first ODI of the three-match series against South Africa in Ranchi on November 30, Rohit Sharma surpassed former Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi as the man with most sixes in 50-over cricket.

The ex-Pakistan all-rounder appeared in 398 ODIs, scoring 8,064 runs and smacking 351 sixes. Rohit, on the other hand, has 11,516 runs with 355 sixes in 279 games.

2. Fourth skipper to win Player of the Match in an ICC final in history

Earlier this year, Rohit Sharma played an instrumental role in securing a historic win for India during the 2025 Champions Trophy final. In pursuit of 252 runs against New Zealand, the opening batter set the tone at the top and scored a run-a-ball 76 with seven boundaries and three sixes to help secure India’s four-wicket win and title.

Rohit was awarded the Player of the Match award, becoming the fourth captain after Clive Lloyd (1975 ICC ODI World Cup), Ricky Ponting (2003 ICC ODI World Cup), and MS Dhoni (2011 ICC ODI World Cup) to win it in an ICC tournament final.

3. Third Indian to the 50-centuries mark

Rohit Sharma helped India salvage a win in the inconsequential third game of the three-match ODI series versus Australia on October 25 at Sydney Cricket Ground. India, set a target of 237, rode on the experienced opener’s unbeaten 121 off 125 balls comprising 13 fours and three sixes to coast to a nine-wicket victory.

It was Rohit Sharma’s 33rd hundred in ODIs and 50th international century, as he became the third Indian after Sachin Tendulkar (100) and Virat Kohli (84), to hit fifty international hundreds.

4. Overtook Virat Kohli and Kumar Sangakkara to top the chart for most ODI hundreds in Australia by a visiting player

With his unbeaten 121 against Australia in Sydney, Rohit Sharma notched his sixth ODI century in Australia, surpassing Virat Kohli and Kumar Sangakkara (5 each) to become the overseas player with most ODI centuries Down Under.

In total, Rohit has featured in 33 ODIs Down Under and scored 1,530 runs at an average of 56.66 with a strike rate of 89.89, including five fifties and six centuries.

5. Second captain to win ICC trophies in ODI and T20I formats

Rohit Sharma’s Team India claimed the 2025 Champions Trophy, making him only the second captain to win ICC titles in both ODI and T20I formats after leading India to the 2024 T20 World Cup triumph.

Only one other captain has achieved that — former India skipper MS Dhoni, who led India to victories in the 2007 T20 World Cup, the 2011 ODI World Cup, and the 2013 Champions Trophy.
